In order to accelerate the construction of a new power system and support and ensure the sustainable development of the economy and society, China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "China Southern Power Grid") is guided by the national West-East Power Transmission Strategy. Relying on the "Hundred Major Projects" of strategic emerging industries of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council - the project of "Research on Key Core Technologies of UHV Multi-terminal Flexible DC Transmission of High-proportion Renewable Energy over Long Distances and Demonstration Construction of Major Projects", it has made a stepped layout to tackle key core technologies of UHV multi-terminal flexible DC transmission and actively promoted engineering demonstration practices. This effectively supports the long-distance transmission of high-proportion renewable energy, and fully serves the complementary advantages of both supply and demand sides of energy and electricity in terms of productivity layout, energy mutual assistance, and green development, realizing high-quality coordinated development between the eastern and western regions.


Firmly Standing at the Overall Situation and Fully Serving the Implementation of a Series of Major National Strategies


Connecting the Tibetan Plateau and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area through UHV power to achieve common prosperity in economic and social development. The project of transmitting clean energy from the Southeast Tibet Clean Energy Base to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is the world's first UHV four-terminal flexible DC project, jointly invested and constructed by China Southern Power Grid and State Grid Corporation of China. It is a major landmark project for central grid enterprises to implement the spirit of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Central Economic Work Conference, and the National Two Sessions, help achieve the country's "dual carbon" goals, and accelerate the construction of a new energy system and the formation of new productive forces. The project will build a sending-end flexible DC converter station in Changdu City and Nyingchi City of Tibet respectively, and a receiving-end flexible DC converter station in Guangzhou City and Shenzhen City of Guangdong Province respectively. The DC transmission line spans four southern provinces, with a total investment of 55 billion yuan. It is planned to be put into operation in 2029 and has entered the approval stage. After the project is completed, it can transmit 45 billion kWh of 100% green electricity to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area every year, accounting for more than one-third of the total electricity consumption of Guangzhou and Shenzhen. This is equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 34 million tons.

Firmly Committed to Serving the Country with Science and Technology and Striving to Build National Strategic Scientific and Technological Strength


China Southern Power Grid has successively made arrangements to tackle a series of world-class problems such as the technology for transmitting high-altitude and high-proportion new energy. In order to safely and reliably transmit the water, wind, and solar resources at an altitude of 4,000 meters in Tibet into electricity and send it to the load center of the Greater Bay Area 2,700 kilometers away, it aims at the forefront of world energy science and technology, firmly takes on the main responsibility of innovation as a central enterprise, and collaborates with more than 100 enterprises, including State Grid Corporation of China, China Datang Corporation, and Power China, to tackle key problems. It has overcome 8 key core technologies and 7 major equipment, and formulated 4 international and national standards.


Based on the major national needs and the forefront of world science and technology, China Southern Power Grid has made early arrangements for the research and development of new flexible DC converter valve equipment. It has successfully developed the world's first set of 6.5 kV/3 kA IGBT flexible DC converter valve and 6.5 kV/4 kA IGCT flexible DC converter valve, and overcome key core technologies such as the design of high voltage resistance, high junction temperature, and low loss of 6.5 kV trench gate IGBT chips and the modular integration of IGCTs. This has significantly reduced the occupied area of the converter valve, overall operation loss, and manufacturing cost. As appraised by authoritative industry organizations such as the China Electricity Council and the China Machinery Industry Federation, it "reaches the international leading level". In addition, it has successfully developed an energy self-balancing flexible DC converter valve, solving the key technical problem of rapid energy balance in the flexible DC transmission system with UHV ultra-long distance and new energy access. As appraised by the expert group led by an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, it "has achieved innovative breakthroughs". The above technologies will lay a solid foundation for the construction and operation of the project of transmitting clean energy from the Southeast Tibet Clean Energy Base to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.


Actively responding to national strategic needs, China Southern Power Grid took the lead in establishing a domestic research and development team. After five years of efforts, it established a capacitor manufacturing process and technical standard system suitable for domestic polypropylene films, achieving independent control from the production of basic raw materials, complete machine manufacturing to performance evaluation, and technological breakthroughs in the whole industry chain. It has successfully developed a fully domestic DC dry capacitor with long life and high voltage resistance, and 40 such capacitors have been mass-applied in the ±800 kV UHV Kunliulong DC project, breaking the foreign monopoly. The project achievements have passed 19 technical and product appraisals. As appraised by the expert group led by an academician, it "fills the domestic gap and reaches the international leading level", and has been successfully selected into the Guidance Catalogue for the Promotion and Application of the First (Set) of Major Technical Equipment by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the First (Set) of Major Technical Equipment in the Energy Field by the National Energy Administration, and the Product Manual of Scientific and Technological Innovation Achievements of Central Enterprises by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission.


China Southern Power Grid took the lead in carrying out research on key technologies such as flexible grid formation, quantum current sensors, and fire prevention and control of key power facilities, and launched research on a number of technologies such as miniaturized solar-blind ultraviolet detection and the application of deep well grounding electrodes in complex geological conditions. It has systematically overcome the key technologies for the flexible DC isolated grid transmission of large-scale new energy, and solved key problems such as the voltage stability of 100% power electronic systems, harmonic oscillation, and AC-DC fault ride-through. Based on the above scientific and technological research, it effectively supports the successful approval of the feasibility study of the Tibet-Guangdong DC project, and has formulated 2 international standards in the field of DC switches and 2 national standards in the field of earthquake resistance and shock absorption.

Strengthening the Role of the Chain Leader and Leading and Driving the Coordinated Development of Enterprises in the Energy and Electricity Industry Chain


Strengthening strategic cooperation between central grid enterprises. China Southern Power Grid and State Grid Corporation of China have successively signed a strategic framework cooperation agreement and a shareholder investment cooperation agreement of Tibet-Guangdong DC Power Operation Co., Ltd. This is the second major project cooperation between the two grids after the Fujian-Guangdong Interconnection Project, which will lead to the optimization of energy and electricity resources on a larger scale and serve to ensure national energy security.


Strengthening joint research on key core technologies. China Southern Power Grid has given full play to its advantage as the "chain leader", fully opened up the application scenarios of major projects, and carried out in-depth strategic cooperation with major domestic enterprises, universities, and scientific research institutions. It has successfully applied for 6 national key projects and 1 integrated project of the National Natural Science Foundation. It has completed 2 key core technology research tasks and 2 tasks of the central enterprise innovation consortium.


Strengthening strategic cooperation across the entire industry chain. Relying on the demonstration construction and scientific and technological research of the Tibet-Guangdong DC project, China Southern Power Grid can effectively drive the coordinated development of industries worth more than 300 billion yuan upstream and downstream of the DC transmission industry chain. During the peak construction period of the project, it can also drive more than 100,000 direct jobs and form a new construction model to promote the large-scale development and external transmission of national new energy.


China Southern Power Grid will focus on research on key core technologies and demonstration construction of major projects, and with greater efforts, promote the demonstration application of major scientific and technological achievements such as domestically produced converter transformers and control and protection equipment. It will continuously consolidate China's leading edge in UHV flexible DC transmission technology, equipment, and industry, and support the high-quality development of national strategic emerging industries.
